Zahara's Story
“I came to this country when I was 26; I’d lived in Africa for a long time. I have three children and I wanted to learn more to improve my education and to find a career. I speak quite good English and I can write it as well, so my family and some of my friends ask me to interpret for them when they have to go to hospital or speak with a teacher at school.”
Zahara was accepted onto Making Training Work’s LDA funded “Use your Languages” training programme. She worked hard and was successful in obtaining the full Level 3 Interpreting Skills qualification, the National Literacy Test at Level 1, as well as the Customer Service modules.
The employment support offered by Making Training Work – help with CV writing, interview practice and guided jobsearch – has helped Zahara to find interpreting work with The Language Shop (Newham) and the Translation and Interpreting service in Barking. She now wants to enrol for a foundation degree in Health and Social Care.
“It hasn’t been easy with my three children to look after; you don’t get all the work you need overnight, you need to be patient, to build up your portfolio. But things are getting better.Without this course nothing would have changed at all.”
